What is Fascia?
Fascia is the thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds everything into place within our bodies; including our organs, blood vessels, bones, nerve fibers and muscles. But this unique tissue does more than just provide internal structure; fascia actually has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin! And so when our body goes into stress mode and tightens up, it is actually the tension and twisting of the fascia that we are feeling. It twists and tightens in the same way you would twist and ring out a towel and it is through fascial maneuvers, that we are then able to untwist and release the tension, stress and emotions that are caught up and stuck within our body.
When we talk about releasing the Fascia what we are doing is relaxing the tension in the body and releasing the emotion. Think of it as doing therapy in reverse. Relaxing the tension in the body releases its connection to the memory by unwinding the bodies own responses. And, in fact, many different modalities of therapy are often indirectly aligned with the Fascial system but are actually unaware of it. Yoga, acupuncture, breathwork and many more, all touch on a piece of the Fascia.
